about

Just south of Colchester, IL there used to be a place called Gin Ridge where the local moonshiners hung out. It's strip mined away these days, but the story goes that if an outsider came looking for “Gin Ridge” the locals always sent him to the next ridge south where the process was repeated again and again until he finally came to the Illinois River. My friend and former bandmate Ken Carlysle wrote this song about the early days of the fabled race car driver Junior Johnson but it seemed to capture the essence of Gin Ridge perfectly.

lyrics

Words and Music, Ken Carlysle

I’m gettin' all jacked up on caffeine
While they load me up at the shack
Gotta 44 Ford
Got Beefed up springs
In a big black Cadillac
About 105 miles to Ashville
With a load of shine in the back
Well I’m a runaway train goin/gone crazy
Just about to jump the track

Chorus:
Feel hear that motor roar
Hear those tires squeal
Junior comin’ down the mountain
Back in the days
when whiskey had wheels

Run by the light of the moon
Through those black Wilkes County pines
Well I’m a one step ahead of the revenuer man
and I’m one step over the line
I’m gonna feed my wife and babies
When I get this whiskey sold
Pay my tithe to the preacher man
This whiskey’s good as gold
