One summer I performed a regular Friday concert in the Dana Thomas house in Springfield, IL; perhaps the best example of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Prairie Style in existence. I was treated as an artist in residence and given virtually unlimited access to the site. Realizing I was performing in a place of genius, I decided to create something inspired by the site and was walking through the rooms with my guitar looking for inspiration when the site manager had told me the story of the statue that stands at the entrance, a piece titled Flower in a Crannied Wall after the Alfred Lord Tennyson poem.

He said on the back of the statue, not only was the Tennyson poem inscribed, but there was also a series of musical chords carved into the terra cotta; chords that remained a mystery to Wright scholars. He told me get a ladder and checkout it out myself, which of course, I did. I photographed and transcribed the chords and used them as the theme for a fingerstyle piece which I composed using Wright’s idea of using simple geometric forms repeated in more complex patterns to reflect the natural landscape.
